The chart below gives information about how families in one country spent their weekly income in 1968 and in 2018.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Band 6.5 Response

The bar graph illustrates the weekly expenditure of households based on their earnings over seven days in the years 1968 and 2018.

Overall, it is clearly visible that in both years, families spent the least amount of money on fuel and power compared to other categories. Moreover, for household goods, the family used the same amount of money in both years.

Firstly, when we talk about 1968, the money spent on food is 35 percent, followed by housing and clothing and footwear, which is 10 percent of families’ weekly income. In addition to this, approximately 7 percent of income is spent on household goods, personal goods, and transport. Fuel and power consumed close to 6 percent.

Shedding light on the year 2018, it is evident that spending on food and clothing accounted for nearly half of the amount spent in 1968, at 15% and 5%, respectively. Following this, around 23% was spent on leisure. As the costs of automobiles and housing increased over the years, families spent 18% and 14% on these two categories. Furthermore, other sectors such as fuel and power, clothing and footwear, and household goods showed no significant change, each remaining below 5%.

It’s clear and organised. Comparisons are made, and the overview is present, but language may not be highly sophisticated.

Not really. What you must include is an overview paragraph, which is more important than a conclusion.

3. What’s the ideal word count?

Around 160–190 words works best. Just being long doesn’t improve your score.

4. Should I describe all the numbers?

No. Focus on overall patterns and the most noticeable changes.
