Reading in OET has become one of the toughest modules to pass. I have seen aspirants struggling to get a band B (350 or above), especially in the reading module. In this blog, we will be talking about some strategies that can prove effective for you in passing the exam. All these strategies I will discuss today will focus on Part B of the reading. We will come up with another blog for Part C in reading.
1. Spend the first 15-20 seconds understanding the general idea.
2. Try to get at least 4 questions correct out of 6. Spend 1 to 1.5 minutes on each question. One should not invest more than 6 to 9 minutes.
3. When you want to solve the questions, try and scan the entire text that has been given in the box. You will have 6 questions to solve with a small paragraph for each question, like a policy document or guidelines. If you miss any part of the paragraph, there is a high chance that you might answer the question wrong, and it will also be a risk to leave a part of the text unread.
4. In most cases, it is extremely critical to deduce the overall meaning of the text and then answer the question by forming an opinion or a general or overall perspective from the entire text.
5. Do not answer the question by matching the words or a sentence, as this might lead you to the wrong answer in most cases. Although there can be some exceptions.
6. Skimming and scanning are the best strategies to be implemented in reading, especially. Scan the paragraph so as to locate the answer.
7. Try the elimination and exclusion method by excluding the options that the paragraph does not talk about. If you do not find any information related to the question, eliminate the choice and consider the left ones.
8. Contradictory options should also be omitted.
9. The left option is the correct answer.
10. Last but not least, polish your reading skills regularly to improve your scanning speed and make your understanding of the text more logical and effective.
