I have often been asked this question, especially by healthcare professionals (nurses), whether IELTS or the OET is the right choice when giving an English proficiency test.
My answer to them is my all-time favourite: The Occupational English Test, due to an array of reasons listed below in this article.
- The OET test is a specifically designed test for medical professionals and the topics that are relatable to their day-to-day work in a hospital, and sometimes I come across students who know the answer without even reading the comprehension in the reading test. For instance, the size of the needle or syringe, water-based lubricant or gel-based, and various tests and diagnoses like CPR. This makes it easy to pass the test with basic linguistic skills.
- The writing module in the OET test is just the letters like referral, transfer, and discharge. If they appear for the IELTS test, they will have to learn the types of graphs in task 1 of the IELTS academic. The terminology in the case of graphs is different for each type, like the line graph and pie chart will have their own glossary, which makes it more challenging for a healthcare professional.
- In the Speaking section, where you have two role-plays for eight minutes each, the role-play cards are from their routine work. Hence, they do not have to struggle with content or idea generation. I have witnessed candidates falling short of ideas go blank while presenting a cue card.
- The examination is, of course, high priced as compared to the IELTS test; however, its advantages will always outweigh the cost of booking it.
- You can pass this test with basic English language skills. In addition, you only need a C+ in writing, which is equivalent to band 6.5 in the IELTS test.
- You can always take one skill retake if you fail in any one of the modules, unlike IELTS pen and paper, where you will have to appear for the entire exam again.
- Taking the OET test can also help you leverage your professional journey as you get a lot of insights and information related to the medical industry. Hence, it helps you with better job prospects in the market, be it India or the UK job market.
