Question – Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences; others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crime.
Some people believe that increasing the duration of prison sentences is the most effective way to reduce crime, while others argue that there are better alternative methods. This essay will discuss both views and explain why a balanced approach can be more effective in lowering crime rates.
People who support longer prison sentences argue that harsh punishment can act as a strong deterrent. They believe that severe penalties and extended time in prison create fear in the minds of potential offenders. When individuals realise that they may spend many years, or even a lifetime, behind bars if caught, they are more likely to abandon criminal intentions. As a result, longer sentences can discourage people from engaging in illegal activities.
On the other hand, others suggest that crime can be reduced more effectively by addressing the underlying causes that lead individuals to commit offences. For instance, some people resort to theft or robbery when they are unable to find employment and struggle to earn a basic living. If such individuals receive support through government programs and social welfare schemes, they may be less likely to commit crimes. In addition, awareness programs can inform people about the assistance available to them during difficult times. However, serious crimes such as murder and rape require stricter action, which can be achieved by improving the efficiency of law enforcement agencies and the judicial system.
In conclusion, while some people believe that longer prison sentences are the only solution to reducing crime, others argue that tackling the root causes of criminal behaviour is more effective. In my opinion, combining strict punishment for serious crimes with social and economic support measures can help reduce crime in society more effectively.
